10/19/2005 Entry: "15 years on the internet"

Well, I'm not really sure of the exact date, but I know that sometime in the fall of 1990 (15 years ago) I got my stanley@cs.umn.edu account. According to http://groups.google.com/groups?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-48,GGLD:en&q=stanley%40cs.umn.edu&sa=N&tab=wg I posted to usenet on 11/09/90. I got the account in September, but it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. I think that I had to use a terminal in the Graduate Lab at the University of Minnesota to access mail and news. There certainly wasn't any web back then. Although there was some gopher since it was developed at umn.

You're so old I bet you paid around $200 for a 9600kbps modem.

I think we were using a couple of accounts on Eric's Prodigy account back in mid-1990. The e-mail address was one of those pretty horrible ones with letters and numbers. I should see if he remembers that at all.
